PICKERING, ON – Roofers from across Durham Region volunteered their time to shingle six townhouses on March 26 and 27 as part of Habitat for Humanity's Centre Town project in Oshawa.

Teams from John McLellan Contracting Inc., Brian's Efficient Roofing, and two independent contractors supplied the labour. GAF, the largest roofing manufacturer in North America, supplied all the material needed for a five-part Timberline HD roofing system.

It was the second phase of the project to be supported by John McLellan Contracting Inc., which also helped to shingle four other Habitat for Humanity townhouses in 2013.  "We're a community-based contractor and are thrilled to be able to support such a worthy project in our backyard," says President John McLellan, who coordinated the roofing effort. "I have always admired the way Habitat for Humanity empowers the people who will live in these homes. This is perfect example of what it means to offer a hand up instead of a hand out."

Each volunteer roofer is known for their commitment to professionalism, McLellan added. "In our industry, you get to know the good roofers from the bad. I was confident everyone involved in this project was committed to doing the job right." John McLellan Contracting Inc. is based in Pickering. Brian's Efficient Roofing is based in Bowmanville. Independent contractors supporting the work included Dave Manser and John Pellerine.

The Centre Town project began in 2012 and will include 24 townhomes. Between four and six units will be constructed per year. Habitat for Humanity Durham mobilizes volunteers and community partners to build affordable housing and promote home ownership as a means to breaking the cycle of poverty. Habitat for Humanity Canada, part of a worldwide network spanning 100 countries, has built 1,400 homes.
